Funnel
You can create a make-shift funnel by cutting the top off of a plastic bottle. This is especially useful for dirty projects where you won't want to keep the funnel afterwards, such as changing your car's oil. When you are finished, you can rinse it out and recycle it.

Fabric Softener
Create a ball of aluminum foil about the size of a baseball. Place it in your clothes dryer and leave it in there. It works as a fabric softener and removes static. There is no need for dryer sheets that you throw away. The ball of foil will last forever, use it over and over again. This is a great eco-friendly tip.

Kill weeds quickly with vinegar

Weed Killer
Vinegar is an inexpensive and more environmentally-friendly weed killer than what is typically found at home and garden stores. It's even effective if you mix a 50/50 solution with water, but I've found it's a little more effective with just pure vinegar.

You can either put the mixture into an old spray bottle, or purchase a pressure sprayer to make it easier on yourself if you have a lot of weeds to cover.

I've also found vinegar to be most effective when it's sprayed onto weeds that receive direct sunlight. Within just a few hours, you'll find the weeds are dead!

Use hollow egg shells to start seedlings.

3)Using a push pin, gently poke a small hole in the bottom of the egg shell in order to let water drain from the soil.

4)Moisten some soil and spoon it into each emptied egg shell. Now you are ready to plant the seeds in your eggshells.

5)Place filled and seeded eggshells into an egg carton as a resting place. Water the seedlings as directed on the package.

6)Once the plants become big enough to plant, you can place them directly into soil outside with eggshells still intact. Eggshells act as a great fertilizer.

Apple iMac turned into an aquarium

Turn computer into Aquarium
An iMacquarium is an Apple G3 iMac which has been turned into an aquarium.

This is a fun and challenging project for an experienced do-it-yourselfer. This is not a full set of instructions, but a brief guideline to follow when building one. Pre-built iMacquariums are available at www.jakeharms.com

To build an iMacquarium you need an iMac, preferably one which is on it's way to the junkyard. A good place to find one would be at your local electronic recyclers. The CRT monitor inside the iMac may hold an electronic charge! MAKE SURE TO HAVE THE CRT MONITOR DISCHARGED BY A TRAINED PROFESSIONAL! There is a risk of serious injury or death if the electronic charge passes through your body.

Once the CRT has been discharged it is safe to disassemble the Mac. Further instructions for disassembly can be found online. When the iMac is fully disassembled you can then design your own tank, lighting, and filtration.

It is best to use acrylic vs. glass to construct the tank. Use the correct glue for the joints and be sure to seal them with a bead of aquarium silicon. Design your tank to fit inside the case of the iMac. The case will need to be modified so you can open it for feeding fish and cleaning the tank.

The light should not produce as little heat as possible as not to overheat the water your fish will be in. Use an aquarium thermometer to monitor water temperature. Be sure all components of the lighting system are protected from any water contact!

An in-tank filter will help keep your tank clean for longer periods of time. Again make sure all electrical components are protected from water contact.

Some fish such as goldfish need a bigger volume of water to stay healthy. Talk to an aquatics specialist to determine which fish will live happily in your tank.

It will take a lot of work, experimenting, and time, but when you are finished you will have a one of a kind aquarium and a great conversation piece.

Pantyhose can be used to polish ski bases

Polishing Ski Wax on Bases
So don't ask me how I know this...but if you are into hot waxing skis, as I still do, once you finish the waxing process, you scrape the bases.

There is still a rough finish and skis need to be smooth.

Using pantyhose works.

Rubbing the waxed bases with pantyhose creates friction and the bases are soon smooth and glossy. The wax lasts longer and works better.

I've been doing this for 25 years and it works great!

You can also add alcohol to the mixture as it has a lower freezing temperature than water. These ice packs will stay cold longer!

Very nice for little kids!
